Music Minus One for improvisation
Description
Music Minus One (MMO) is meant to be accompanied by the musician on whichever instrument (or voice type) as an aid or as an accompaniment to performance. The technique is the same as the later development of karaoke for the voice.
“1971 was an important year for me. After a six-month stay in Japan I returned to Europe, to Cologne, where I lived at that time. I bought two wonderful folk instruments in Hungary, a zither and a hurdy-gurdy, which were made by Mihály Bársony. Additionaly I bought a “Synthi A” suitcase synthesizer in the Zinovieff EMS Studio in London, which I connected with the two hungarian folk instruments.
Also that year I got to visit New York with Stockhausen for the first time, where we played with the New York Philharmonic.
In New York I was commissioned to write music for a short film. There was no dialogue in the film, only my music played from start to the end. The character and duration were determined by the film. By transforming the sound of the zither and the hurdy-gurdy with the synthesizer, I was able to create a particularly richly saturated sound.
Freely improvising, I managed to record the soundtrack material in one day.
After two days work at the studio, the work was completed, called: “Music for N.Y.”
This 11-minute piece is perfect for improvising to on any instrument, drums or singing, either for our own pleasure or as a concert performance.

As an example, listen to a CD released at the Budapest Music Center (BMC) in 2001, two jazz musicians László Dés and András Dés, improvise on soprano saxophone and bodhran to “Music for N.Y.”.

“1971 fontos év volt számomra. Éppen féléves Japán tartózkodás után tértem vissza Európába. Kölnben laktam és először jutottam el New Yorkba, ahol Stockhausennel együtt a New York-i Filharmonikusokkal játszottunk. Magyarországon két csodaszép népi hangszert, egy citerát és egy nyenyerét vásároltam, amelyeket Bársony Mihály készített. Londonban vásároltam Zinovieff EMS Studio-jában egy “Synthi A” kofferszintetizátort, amelyet összekapcsoltam a két magyar népi hangszerrel.
Egy new yorki rendezőtől megbízást kaptam, hogy zenét írjak egy rövidfilmjéhez. A filmben nem volt dialógus, csak az én zeném szólt elejétől végig. A karakter és az időtartam a film által volt meghatározva.
A citera és a nyenyere hangját a szintetizátorral transzformálva egy különösen dúsan telített hangzást sikerült létrehoznom. Szabadon improvizálva egy nap alatt sikerült a filmzene anyagát felvenni. Kétnapos studiómunka után kész lett a mű: “Music for N.Y.” Ez a 11 perces mű kiválóan alkalmas arra, hogy bárki akár saját örömére, vagy koncertszerűen bármilyen hangszeren, dobolva, vagy énekelve ezzel a zenével együtt improvizáljon. A “Music for N.Y.” Music Minus One (-1) verziót itt bárki ingyenesen meghallgathatja, vagy innen letöltheti, de a koncertről vagy felvételről küldjön információt a studio(at)eotvospeter.com címre.
