I was led to the music of Domenico Scarlatti by Gabriel Garcia Márquez. In his novel “Love and other Demons”, he notes that Scarlattti teaches music to the young heroine Sierva´s mother. I was so taken by the idea of this story that I went and played through all five hundred and fifty-five of his sonatas; I was unable to tear myself away from this sensitive and dramatic music. I integrated a number of passages into one of the arias in my opera. Hommage à Domenico Scarlatti is an arrangement of this aria in which the tenor line is taken by a solo horn.

Die Musik von Domenico Scarlatti habe ich durch Gabriel Garcia Márquez entdeckt. In seinem Roman “Love and other Demons” erwähnt er Domenico Scarlatti als Musiklehrer der Mutter von Sierva, der jungen Heldin der Geschichte. Ich war von diesem Gedanken so begeistert, dass ich alle seine 555 Sonaten durchgespielt habe. Ich konnte von seiner sensiblen und dramatischen Musik nich loskommen. Einige Passagen habe ich ausgewählt und in eine Arie meiner Oper integriert. Hommage à Domenico Scarlatti ist eine Bearbeitung dieser Arie, in der der gesungene Tenorpart von einem Hornsolo übernommen wird.

J’ai découvert la musique de Domenico Scarlatti grâce à l’écrivain Gabriel Garcia Márquez. Dans son roman Del amor y otros demonios (De l’amour et autres demons), Domenico Scarlatti apparaît comme le maître de musique de la mère de Sierva, la jeune heroine de l’histoire. Cette idée m’a tellement fascine que j’ai joué l’ensemble de ses 555 sonates. Je ne parvenais pas à me libérer de sa musique sensible et dramatique. J’en ai sélectionné quelques passages et je les ai intégrés dans une aria de mon opera Love and Other Demons. Hommage à Domenico Scarlatti est un arrangement de cette aria dans laquelle la partie de tenor chantée est reprise par un cor solo.
