Eötvös: Three Sisters

In the Opera category, Peter Eötvös’s Three Sisters opera presented in May 2019, was chosen as the most significant musical theatrical performance of the 2018/19 season in Russia.

In Russia, the Association of Music Critics annually selects the most important events in the musical theater profession by category. The performance of Péter Eötvös’ opera got the best title in the opera category.

Premiered on May 16, 2019, for the first time in Russia, Péter Eötvös’s stage work Three Sisters was performed at the Yekaterinburg Opera and Ballet Theater.  The author co-conducted Oliver von Dohnányi in the multi-ensemble piece. The first full-length Eötvös Opera was born after Chekhov’s well-known play at the request of the Lyon Opera. The opera’s libretto does not follow the order of the original plot: the authors tell the story over and over again, focusing on the figures of three characters – Irina, Andrej and Masha.
