Steine
for ensemble
Description
First performance: November 1990, Frankfurt
Ensemble Modern
Conductor: Peter Eötvös
This piece was written for Pierre Boulez’s sixtieth birthday; from Peter to Pierre, stone to stone.
The first half of the piece is dedicated to education. Musicians learn to listen, to respond, to invent musical elements to be able to play with each other. You learn to be responsible for your independence – something that is not common in traditional European orchestras. Here the “conductor” does not conduct but forms a trio with the two percussionists.
There is an interlude of improvisation performed by the conductor, who gives each of his strokes to those musicians who are playing with the stones.
The second half is a “real” orchestral piece based on the opening chord of Boulez’s “Don” (Pli selon pli). The cymbal player gradually takes over command from the conductor.
